Well this is how it looks when you want to lure tourists to your little town to spend lots of money there, lol. There are more scary versions of the kappa out there that might be more of the feel for the old time folklore story, but this one serves a different purpose. Thanks for reminding us about the dark side of the kappa, over time we tend to forget.

Yep it stands in Jozankei, Hokkaido, Japan, about 30 minutes or so outside of Sapporo. Lots of onsens and public foot baths there. This statue is guarding a foot bath at the top of a little hill right up from the main shopping tourist area, next to a little shrine.
